What are your pet peeves? Cliched beginnings?

I just encountered a great blog post about Chapter 1 Pet Peeves for literary agents.

Starting with either 'Once upon a time' or 'It was a dark and stormy night'. Boring and overdone.

Having the character wake up and describing all the mundane things they do. Do I need to know that they brush their teeth before going to work?

Having the character look in the mirror and describing everything about them. Frankly, I couldn't care less whether they are 6 foot 5 or 5 foot 6.

Overuse of adverbs/adjectives (though that is for the whole book).

Anything to do with dreams. It strikes me as the easy way out.

So basically, anything cliche or boring. Sorry if this seems melodramatic, but bad writing really does annoys me.

    Oh, and great link, btw.

  • No chapter 1 pet peeves, but my biggest novel pet peeve is long bouts of boring, "unspicy" narration with no dialouge at all, never mind uninteresting, in between. If you're going to do this, make the narration hip and interesting to read, like in Catcher in the Rye. Speaking of which, long paragraphs that go on for two pages, like you see in THAT book, also annoy me.
