I have seen many questions answered with Katrina/Bush this and that?
Essentially blaming the Federal Government for the Katrina disaster, despite the FACT that a Democratic Governor and Mayor failed to respond quickly in the first place. And of course the people who always depended upon the government for their very existence waited around instead of making a plan to get out on their own. If we had to depend upon these people (the young able-bodied) our country would be in a lot of trouble.
Why do people still bring this up in the elections section? New Orleans had problems of corruption long before Katrina, why do people not recognize that instead of blaming it on some nonsense about race?
"Even before Hurricane Katrina and the levee breaches in 2005 that devastated New Orleans, the city and Louisiana had earned a reputation as being fertile ground for corruption.
"Half of Louisiana is under water and the other half is under indictment," Billy Tauzin, who represented a Louisiana district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1980 to 2005, once famously said of his state.
"Over the course of many decades Louisiana and New Orleans have earned a reputation as being exceptionally tolerant of corruption," said Jim Letten, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana. "This fueled the demise of the local economy as it drove many companies away and kept them away."
Since his appointment by President George W. Bush in 2001, Letten has indicted 213 state and local officials and private individuals and, he said, convicted "almost 100 percent."
Those found guilty include former New Orleans city council member Oliver Thomas for bribery and kickbacks in 2007."

Oh wow. First of all, nearly 95% of the area WAS evacuated, that's pretty good I'd say.
Secondly, most of those that didn't leave didn't have any other option. No car. Do you expect them to walk out? It takes a day and a half to walk to Baton Rouge, without stopping and this also includes crossing one of two(depending on direction) of the longest bridges in the United States and thousands of cars. Baton Rouge itself received a Category 1 from Katrina, I remember well. It would be safer for one to not risk that, its dangerous enough to walk in a thunderstorm. And it took almost 8 hours to get to BR by car for my family, a normal 1 hour drive.
Then you can bring up the warnings. One of the reasons those WITH cars didn't leave(the other major was family(elderly) and pets, who, at least down here, are largely considered part of the family) is because for so many years, we have had major hurricane threats, George, Ivan, etc. and never got it. I suppose some just thought this would be the same.
The people of New Orleans are mostly good people, many of you, including you poster, have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to the citizens. Sure there are lazy people, there are in every city(yes even yours, oh my god), but don't act like that's how all/most of us are because the FACT is, that is just not true.
New Orleans citizens were lead to believe that the levees were in stable condition, the levees are the responsibility of the Army Corp of Engineers, which is FEDERAL. This is what people mean when they blame the federal government.
However, I must agree that our local politicians suck, Nagin was voted in again by bused in Absentee voters from Texas who will probably never move back. I do not know, nor have seen anyone around here who has anything good to say about Nagin. And Blanco, as you might know, is no longer in office. She was replaced by Bobby Jindal, who won in a landslide victory.

The problem is -that there was no leader ship at all . The very residence of Katrina could have been organized to clean up recycle and rebuild in a much more nature friendly way. Much warnings -but no real centers of leadership and help stations -where citizens would have felt empowered through involvement . It is the governments job -they are paid to offer assistance and leadership from tax's . Instead they just shipped them off after so long of time.
Every big city -has their share of sin -in fact no one is perfect.
How judgmental -" As you judge so shall you be judged". Greed and self righteousness is a sin as well.

No, you've got it all wrong, Global Warming caused Katrina. Bush caused Global Warming by not sighning the Kyoto treaty. 200 years of oppressive whites caused the poor down trodden blacks in N. O. to distrust the govt. when they told them that the wind and water and surging waves are dangerous towards their existance and they should get out of the way. After all that, THEY RE-ELECTED the mayor????)
Thank God we are going to have a black president so they won't have anyone else to blame!

California has been warned that eventually an earthquaqe will wipe them out. Is it going to be their fault because they did not move today? Of course not.
The problem was not the huricane...it was the levee's. Oh, and BTW the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT has complete authority and funding on the levee's. This IS NOT managed by the local government.

Put the blame on the people.
They went out of control and did not follow proper procedures
This mess in New Orleans should be a lesson that in the past
people have had to clean up there own mess and don't depend
on big government to bail them out. People are weak and they
expect the government to do everything for them.
Source(s): When the people heard there was a storm coming and to evacuate..they sat on their hands and waited? so what can you expect? - Anonymous1 decade ago
Informed people will agree with you. The "chocolate" imbecile mayor and the stupid Governor are the ones to be blamed what happened after the disaster.
It just is convenient for the liars and twisters to ignore the facts. and it is still going on. Incredible amounts of money wasted on corrupt politicians and criminal people.

It is how he reacts, it took him 4 days to even KNOW what the heck was going on in New Orleans, You would think the nit wit learned his lesson wouldn't you, not old George, As the Russians are invading one of our allys did he rush back to DC to react, not George, he spent 3 more days at the Olympics, watching BB Games and flirting with the volley ball team,
Actually that probably is a good thing, he does not do anything but screw up when he gets involved anyway, it is like having Alfred E Newman in charge of our future.

All I can say is that Hurricane Agnes hit my area back in June '72, I had over 30' of water at my house, me and everyone I know lost everything....we didn't get half the aid the people of N.O. got, we lived in tents too, but we didn't complain or blame the government....
We all pulled together and helped each other, there was no looting....
I blame the citizens and leader of N.O. for not being prepared, not following evacuation orders, not being compassionate community and so forth....you simply cannot blame Bush....
It is time people sarted taking responsbility for their own actions!!!

Nice try, but much of what you stated is true of many big cities in America. Ever take a look at the corruption in D.C.?
GWB/Katrina is a legitimate argument, it was one of the worse hurricanes in US history and the man stayed on vacation.

The right would love to bury the white house response to katrina--or should i say LACK of response. Typical of you to defend that scumbag bush. And when history decides boy george was our worst president ever, you will then decry all historians are "left wingers". Same with the scientists who say climate change is real, you can slander them, too. It appears you are the only sane, educated american left--why not run for president?
