it's free and it helps you learn japanese and other languages. i'm currently using the site to learn german and french.

Firstly you need to learn Kanji, Katakana and hiragana. Learn the vowels and sounds then buy a japanese - english dictionary. Those translation websites always get it wrong so dont go there.
