New York is one of 12 states that currently have state level laws prohibiting local municipalities from passing BSL. That means no one can take your dog away based on looks/characteristics or cite you for for owning the dog breed of your choice. Yay! However, there may be counties/cities that have been "gradfathered" in under old laws, so be sure to check whether you live in one of those. For example, I live in FL, where BSL is prohibited, but in Miami-Dade county, BSL still exists because that particular county passed that law before the prohibitive law took place. As a pit bull owner, even if your state prohibits BSL, you still need to be aware of where BSL does exist, in case you ever travel with your pet, or move, etc. In some places, authorities can seize your dog even if you are just passing through (if that place has current BSL in place and your dog is in violation of such laws).
