Usually one of the best ways to understand a verse is to look at how it is translated in more than one version. Different Bibles have different levels of "readability". So are designed to be as word for word accurate as possible (even if the differences between original language and English makes it hard to understand) while others are translated to make it understandable.
Also, while the King James Bible is a very good translation, the English language has changed enough in the four hundred years since it was translated that something it can be difficult to understand.
Try a site like http://biblegateway.com/
It will allow you to read the verses in several translations. The New Living Bible is a good one for readability, as is the Amplified Bible. You can also try the Message Bible, which is not actually a "translation", but a "paraphrase", where the author retells the scriptures in his own words - often making the meaning clearer.

Download the Free e-Sword software along with some of the commentaries like Albert Barnes - Notes on the Bible, and then you can look up verses and compare what different commentators have had to say about their meaning. http://www.e-sword.net/
Also there are quite a few links on the Free Stuff page @ http://web.express56.com/~bromar that go to sites to learn how to read and understand what the Bible teaches.

Umm... if only there were a site where you could, like ask questions about things you didn't understand, and then other people could answer your questions.
Too bad there's no site like that.
