Is the term, "Winning/win/won the silver metal", an oxymoron?

Seems how, if you do "win" the silver metal, you almost always lose the last event of your sport.

Update:

It is possible to win a bronze metal, because you can lose in the semi-finals, but can win the bronze metal match.

I would think so. Because really you won, but didn't. Because you won the silver medal, but you didn't win the event/race/or whatever.
