From a religious perspective, what is marriage?

Don't say marriage is between a man and woman, that isn't what I'm asking. I don't mean who can get married. What I mean is what constitutes marriage from a religious perspective? Does God care if about the legal aspect of marriage or only about the vows and the union of souls?

Personally I think He cares more about the vows since I would imagine He's not too thrilled when someone doesn't keep their promises. But He also doesn't want anyone to break the laws of the land in which they reside. However, I have yet to hear of anyone getting thrown in jail because they want to marry someone without signing the paperwork.

From creation, human kind was marked as being "in the image of God".

Christians have held that God is a Trinity, three persons in communion, yet one God. That is a necessary belief for God to be capable of love without another being.

Marriage is the expression of the "image of God", in that neither male nor female is complete without the other, and that they are to present a holy relationship, based on love, to the world.

Marriage is holy, just as God is holy, and that is why it is an "honorable estate". It expresses both the nature of God and the fulfillment of man's nature. That is why it is a religeous thing not just a contract or a piece of paper. The vows were made before God LONG before there were applications for marriage.
