Draw a tic tac toe board. Then, try and fill the board with x's until there are 3 spaces left. The x's must not create a three-in-a-row. How can you do this? Tell me where you placed the 6 x's, according to a numpad. So for example,

leave the diagonal empty (7-5-3 or 1-5-9 in your drawing).
Put an X in two opposite corners and then put an X in the two adjacent spaces.
You could put Xs in 1-2-4 and 6-8-9 (leaving 7-5-3 blank) or you could put Xs in 2-3-6 and 4-7-8 (leaving 1-5-9 blank).
