Is it Right to worship Idol ?

Saint and great men have eschewed Idols, like Jesus, Mohammad, Kabir, Swami Dayanand, Rabindranath Tagore, Vivekananda, Sawan Maharaj, Adaneshwar,

Still Hindus prefer to. Did they not explain properly ?

But many Saints do not object or hate this, like Saibaba, Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Shivananda,

Update:

Is worship same as going to a Mosque, Church, Temple, Synagogue ?

Is it same as saying a Prayer, Namaz, Holy water, Eating bread, lighting a candle, incense stick, flowers, bells, singing ?

Update 2:

What is and Why worship ?

With out reason and analysis isn't it Blind faith and superstition ?

Update 3:

Proper counseling by Saints could remove all doubt !

Hindus believe in six philosophy, where Idol & form-free exists. Also one GOD and many symbols exists.

Can't we say: "Food for Body is in Eating, either Raw or Cooked in plates"?

Isn't 'food for the Mind' be In Form or without ?

Update 4:

Dear Nitai Gaura: The gaudia temple in Mumbai could not explain, nor your blog clarifies.

Isn't it to do something with 'Bhakti Yog' ?

What is 'Yog' ? Isn't it achieved by Meditation ?

Update 5:

Hasn't Scientific machines failed to prove the power of the Mind ?

Why we don't specify 'How to Meditate' ?

Isn't the Mind unique like our Body ?

Update 6:

Dear Kirax: Conflict is most in the Middle-East, where Bamiyan statues were destroyed !

Although Saints in India like Chaitanya, Saibaba supported ('Yantra & Tantra') Devise & Process, but themselves did not require these for connecting with GOD.

Update 7:

Dear sweethea...: My hints should bring out a correct answer which the Saints did not explain for the Modern man. 'Point of focus' for whom and How & Why.

Hint: Again Ramakrishna and Dada Lekhraj mentioned Human who are (not Hermits) but connected to family & Society have to go from Form-to-Formless.

Short & Sweet is the Focus.

Update 8:

We are reasoning, Why Idol and why not. Rightly its ‘Point of Focus’. Requires extreme Faith ruled by ‘Emotion’. Path of ‘Bhakti Yog’.

Koran & Gita says Reason disturbs the Faith. To avoid the Blind faith, reason leads to knowledge through analysis as ‘Gyan Yog’ which creates ‘Ego’.

Arjun aimed at the birds eye. If Emotion ruled he could not kill the BIRD. Here faith was for the Act & Guru. Analysis could lead him away from the sight. Remains is Action ‘Karma Yog’. Our latest saints are Motivators as good orators. So, is it the Communal community which kill the Rich & Powerful after saluting the Red flag, the Right Karma Yogi ? We could easily blow up the Twin Towers at New York ! It’s the Selfish motive and act for Justice to Punish, that’s ‘Ego’. Who says we are judged at the End & by our Act !

Update 9:

‘Why Idols’, could be Faith, but How & by Whom depends on the Trigunas. The type of Human, For & Against Idol is Nature depending on the Geography. Depending on old scriptures with modern gagets around where does Desire & Humility end. To be Humane is the Best emotion. Have Faith. It can make the Nur of ‘Kaba’ cry out, that’s the first emotion.

Idol worship is wrong if god doesn't exist in idol. If god doesn't exist in idol, then he is not omnipresent.

Its nobody's business to tell others how a god should be worshiped. Let others to express their love and devotion in watever way they want.

India is a land where so many ways of achieving god has been developed. It is more like a science. In ancient days people were experimenting in different directions. And those who have achieved have not condemned other ways. Even denying god is considered a way. It is more of a scientific approach. Meditation is such an approach. Buddha removed all kind of exploitation in the name of god by bringiing in a totally new kind of philosophy. He even denied god and insisted that by knowing yourself everything is known. Everything is interconnected. You start from one end and you reach the ultimate..

But most people find believing in god and worshipping to be simple and easy and it is not considred invalid. Man as he is requires something to hang on to. It is impossible to love and worship a formless god. A form is required for you to relate with. That is why Jesus said I am the way. You can go through me, surrender your will to me. And Ramakrishna achieved it by being a devotee to Ma Kali. You can not do away with the symbols. Those who reached to their ultimate heights have not denied it.The approach in India had been that you choose any path and fianally you reach there. And life is not finite you are given millions of chances. You missed it this time come back next time.

Basically worship is for pleasing oneself through heart and mind as the almighty resides there and witnesses each and every action, thought, and an indifferent spectator/witness of one's life throughout, right from birth to last breath. Idol worship is unique and ideal one. Idol is made by human as has been thought and seen through pure thoughts and is thought to be still partner and friend to exchange each and every thought, emotion, sentiment, pleasure and grieves. As has been seen inside, has been made/formed outside. The great seers have thought deeply. Simply telling 'worship God' won't suffice. There should be some distinct and clear target where one can fix his sight and mind to make the mind-waves still and steady. Instead of staring at blank sky, it is always better to stare at beloved idol that pleases eyes and mind.

    who worships idols?

If you worship idols as God, you are terribly mistaken.

Let me ask the question slightly different way. Does gun kill? no because I have seen an armory full of gun never killed anyone, but gun in the hand of a madman kills many. Gun is an instrument of death.

Similarly the idols are purely instruments of worshiping God. Do you have reverence for the instrument, surely you do. The Cross or Kabha or a statue of Krishan is revered as a symbol of God.

A piece of cloth with Red white and blue with stars and stripes is much more than any other piece of cloth as it represents USA. Does that mean that I salute a piece of cloth? Of you believe that then my friend you are beyond help.

Idolatry is usually defined as worship of any cult image, idea, or object, as opposed to the worship of a monotheistic God. It is considered a major sin in the Abrahamic religions whereas in religions where such activity is not considered as sin, the term "idolatry" itself is absent. Which images, ideas, and objects, constitute idolatry, and which constitute reasonable worship, is a matter of contention with some religious authorities and groups using the term to describe certain other religions apart from their own (sometimes resulting in iconoclasm).

if you find a good statue no I am kidding of course you can worship in your own home, it is the word of Jesus that says a church ( temple ) is only a building of sticks and stones but the true house of god is in your own heart, if you look at it from that point of view any religion can fit into that sentence your heart is the true temple you don't have to go to a church or a cathedral you should worship in your own home it is more personal that way

Source(s): I may be pagan but Jesus Christ was a great philosopher

NO It's not right to worship ANYONE other than GOD. that's why the major religions ( Christianity, Islam and Judaism) are called monotheistic , they are supposed to worship a sole unique supreme being that controls everything that's going on in the universe. If there were more than one god then there is a possibility that they fight and the consequences of that would be unimaginable, in fact your question reflects the basic differences between God and man. One of the characteristics of God is that he is unique, one , sole ; no partners or peers.

NB muslims don't worship their prophet Mohammad, they rather respect him a lot.

It all depends on your belief or what your religion says (if you are religious).Again, depending on your religion, it is the same going to Mosque, Temple, Church...and so on! The true meaning of Namaz, Holy Water, eating bread and others are all in the person's heart. If you do it from your heart, it is meaningful to you.

i'd say if you use the idol as a symbol through which to focus your energy on true worship (service) to that which you choose, then you're okay. and if you provide people with a symbol for that purpose, you're okay, too. but if you use the idol as a SUBSTITUTE, as the object of your worship instead of a symbolic medium, it can become dangerously harmful to you and the world because a selfish and/or unscrupulous individual can exploit you and your worship for their own selfish and/or unscrupulous purposes, never to anybody's or anything's good.
