Do any of you ever remember your Grandparents or Great Grandparents calling a couch a Davenport?

My Great Gran always did, so I was just wondering if anyone else's did.

No, I've never heard of that.

Your question intrigued me, so I did some research:

Davenport is the name of a series of sofas manufactured by the now-defunct A.H. Davenport Company. Due to the popularity of the furniture at the time, the name "Davenport" has become a genericized trademark like "Kleenex" or "Band-Aid." It is often used as a synonym for "sofa", especially in the Midwestern United States and in northern New York state. Specifically, it is used in the Adirondack Region and the Tughill Plateau, especially amongst those born there before World War II. The so-called Davenports of the northern New York region are often locally made sofa versions of the locally manufactured convertible Adirondack Chair.

As a matter of fact yes. It's interesting how the names have changed over the years. Davenport, Divan, Settee, Couch, Sofa, etc. I grew up in that generation.

    davenport

"large upholstered couch," 1897, apparently named for the manufacturer. Earlier (1853) "a kind of small ornamental writing table." The proper name is attested from 12c., from a place in Cheshire (O.E. Devennport).

I remember my parents, as well as grandparents calling it a davenport. I better remember when it was called a "divan which is a shortened form of davenport: D'van, Divan

I never even met my two grandmothers. The both died many years before I was born. I know some things about my great grandparents but never met them. On my mom's side, my great grandmother was a full blooded Mohawk that was born on the reservation somewhere either in or around NY or Conn. She married an Englishmen, I know nothing about him. On my dad's side, the were ethinic Rusyin's from the Ukriane.Don't know anything much about them either except that some time they came to the US probably in the 1870's or so where my grandfather was born in the US. My grandfather went back to Russia in or around 1917 to take part in the overthrow of the Czar. My father was born in Poland and they all came back to the US in 1927. My father was born a US citizen although he was born overseas. It's sort of complicated.
