I live in NY, it's a great city but the traffic and the cost of living are out of this world, and completely unacceptable. I love NY but am choosing to leave (as most people are). You can't get affordable living in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, or even Long Island unless you want to live in something UN-liveable, or in the most unsafe area near the projects. It's a great place to visit, but unless you plan on making 100K+ a year, it is so unrealistic.

To the person above who wants to stay for 3 months on a very low budget? Good luck! Even the cheapest places (like hostels, and hotels with shared bathrooms) are still $40+/night. You could try renting an apartment for short term but a lot of people are not interested in short term rentals and would therefore increase the amount of rent they would charge. You could try looking OUTSIDE of the city for a short term rental but it would still be hard seeing as rents are incredibly outrageous here.

Most people who say they hate it say that because they were disappointed with some minut aspect of their visit. It's like they are looking for reasons to validate "New Yorkers are the rudest people". I've been there several times (and going again next week) and I have never ran into a situation or person that would ruin the experience of being there. There are rude people in EVERY city in the world. I love the city and would never stop visiting.

Love the diversity and the great food made by people from all around the world. There's always somewhere to go and something to do.

I HATE the rude people on the streets and the subways..but thats about it.

My cousin and I are planning on going but we don't know where to start or how to plan the trip. We hope to go next summer... and stay for three months. Have you any suggestions about where to stay - cheap place to stay (on a low bugget... very...very...very low budget)
