When you plug in the iPod to your computer, iTunes will open up and say "The iPod is synced with another library. An iPod can only be synced with one library at a time. What would you like to do?" Click transfer purchases to keep your music on your iPod. It won't get the music onto your computer, it will only keep the music on your iPod.
I have a MAC so this may not work if you have a PC, but everything should work the same since iTunes is the software being used.
UPDATE: Well, I'm just making an assumption when I say this but, no, I'm not sure that the music will be safe. If you sync any new music onto the iPod and the music already on there isn't in your library, the old songs will be erased when the new songs are synced (sorry that answer was so redundant). I'M JUST ASSUMING, so it may turn out that I'm wrong, but as for me (being the wet blanket that I am), I would risk it.
ANOTHER UPDATE: IT WORKS!!! MANUALLY MANAGE YOUR iPOD!!! IT WORKS!!!
Okay, I'm so excited because I'm experiencing the same exact issue as you! My hard drive crashed and my music files were lost and I didn't know how get new music on there without losing my files! But I downloaded the single of the week to try it, and it WORKS! You're right! MANUALLY MANAGE IT!!!
I added a single song, but it will still work if you want playlists and vids. Just make sure that you've checked off "Manually manage music and videos" from the iPod setting when you plug it into iTunes! Then select what you want to sync and slide it over to your iPod in the devices list. You might have to authorize the computer to play the song, but it's not difficult; just use your log-in, and you're good! YOU'LL KEEP YOUR FILES ON THE iPOD!
