I've lived in China for 5 years, and am currently in Taiwan. Yes. It is still communist. It is advancing more to socialism each day, and granted, it's a far cry from Mao's tyrannical days, but repression of free speech and religious issues, esp for Christians and Falun Gong groups, are still prevalent and very real.

No, now it is really pretty much communist is name only. China is now basically has an increasingly capitalist economic system but has an authoritarian government running the country. It is only Communist in name and in the speeches by its governmental officials. In reality, it now has a capitalist economic system with some socialist elements and governmental enterprises but those are fading fast as the private business enterprises take over more and more aspects of Chinese economic production. Now there are private businesses, private property and stock markets.

Mao and the revolutionaries are gone. Deng changed China toward capitalism. Much sooner than people realize it will be almost completely capitalist though they will still pretend to honor Mao and the Communisit revolutionaries. Although the government is still authoritarian, the vast changes in the country and the increasing wealth and educational levels of the citizenry will make it harder and harder for the government to exercise the dominance it once enjoyed. In fact, that is already changing to some extent.

I just returned from visiting relatives in Shanghai and attending the Olympics in Beijng. My Chinese relatives are pretty satisfied and excited by the economic progress in the nation. They don't really yet yearn for the political freedoms we treasure in the West. At least not yet anyway, but that might change over time. Presently they are more concerned with economic progress. They do express concern about pollution and corrupt governmental officials. But overall, they are very happy that the country has progressed so far so fast economically. This is the same thing that the Pew Research Center found in its recent survey of Chinese citizens.

Edit to add: Actually communism was an economic system, but authoritarian regimes like Stalinist Soviet Union and China in the days of Mao were put in place and the party become all powerful. It is hard to separate out, but today I would call China authoritarian or totalitarian with an increasingly capitalist economic system (it still has remnants of the old statist economic system but that is changing pretty rapidly.)

Not like Cuba. Cuba does not force abortions. China does, yet all these pro-life republicans think it is a great idea to trade with them and refuse to allow a free American to send hard earned money to a family in Cuba. Yes, communist, but No, Not like Cuba at all.

China has a totalitarian, single party government, so in that respect it is communist (though not like Cuba that for all intents and purposes is a despotism). Its economy though is a state controlled capitalistic one.

Yes, but it is infusing some freedoms into its country. It has to if it will survive. I predict that it will continue in that direction. Because of human nature, communism only works in theory. Sharing is a nice idea, but it just doesn't work in the long-run.

Yes. Read the current news article about the folks involved in the opening ceremony. They stated it is easier to train people in China, compared to America, because they do not have to worry about human rights.

    Yes, it is still communist.

It's Economy is now more market-owned in its production-assets though. (They are buying and selling stock in chinise stuff now, and slowly getting better at doing it.)

It's communist, but investors help decide how to run the commercial entities now. The government no longer completely owns the economy.

Source(s): The government is communist. The Economy is no longer 100% socialist. Good question. (Communism actially refers to government socialism refers to economic system.) Our government is representively democratic. Our economic system is currently mostly a supply-side market-capital system.)

Yes it is. They are allowing a limited free market in because they like everyone else except our own democrats realize communism doesnt work. The problem is there is nothing to stop their government from seizing those companys for the themselves once they are built up enough. A very very foolish investment if you ask me.
