Long Drive with 1 year old baby - Does this sound stupid to you?
Ok so my wife and are are looking at options for the winter holiday. I will be off work for two weeks so we are planning to go to Florida. We were thinking of driving down from NYC (1,120 miles = 18 hours minimum in car) with our 1 year old son, 5 year old black lab and whatever we need as far as luggage. We have a car, it's about 10 years old but should be fine making the trip. I was planning on taking it in for an oil change/tire check a week or two before heading out.
So if we take 2 days do you think the trip would be doable? Will we be miserable. If my wife sits next to our 1 year old son in back do you think they will be able to entertain each other enough to not make me goes insane from a baby screaming?
Helpful comments/criticism appreciated.
FYI the baby does great in the car seat right now, he really enjoys car trips but that amount of time worries me. I have discussed a portable DVD player with my wife...she isn't too big on him watching TV since she thinks it's bad for him.
Dog has done this trip before, key is to keep her hydrated but she basically sleeps the whole time (very well behaved large dog) she also loves car rides in general.

I would worry more about the dog that the baby. I'd find someone to doggy sit. That is a long time for a dog to be in a car and it's not like he can go in restaurants and you can't exactly leave him in the hot car. And, dogs do get carsick. My friend's dog gets horribly carsick, and it's not vomit that gets everywhere. Think the other end!!! ew!
The baby will most likely sleep, a lot. Take two days and make sure you get out of the car to eat, even if it is a picnic at a park or somewhere baby can stretch his legs. Keep your wife up front until needed. If you get an early start (6am or before, he'll sleep a lot of it). Or a later start (closer to nap time).
I've driven quite a bit with my little ones and they just sleep and sleep. Then they are WIDE awake when it is time to go to bed so make sure your wife gets in some naps while you drive, too.
Have fun!
IDK if your little one watches any TV, but if so, a portable DVD player may save your life. Thank goodness for Disney!!

I think that if you are patient people and enjoy stopping in different locations to do fun stuff then yes it can work. Don't make it a job but stay organized w/ fun adventure on the way
Make sure everyone has snacks, maybe you all could get a DVD movie player for the back seat when things get tough throw in a movie, also make sure that you give your wife a break from entertainment ~ maybe you all could trade driving for a bit too.
Stop at areas which are safe for your baby to run/play as well as the dog to run even if on a leash you could run him so he gets tired and will sleep
Honestly, I think the trip back will be more difficult so I would make more time to get home safely then going to Florida
Also, make sure the dog is allowed where you all are staying
Make sure you have some sort of on star or cell phone in case your car does break down ~ you don't want to be unsafe w/ a baby on the side of the road without some sort of assistance if needed
Have Fun and be Sweet no matter

If your budget can swing it I would invest in a portable DVD player. We often go on long trips 6+ hours to visit grandparents have have found that our 20 month old twins and 6 year old son do great with it. I would also suggest lots of snacks and a couple of stops at a park. Good luck!!

if you are only taking 2 days vacation, and the drive is 18 hours one way, that wont leave any time to do anything, except drive.
i have taken an 11 hour rip with a 4 month old before. its not that bad. we had a good time sitting in the back seat. then again, he was at that age where he was sleeping alot too. i think the entertainment will be fine. the driving however, is gonna suck :)

You are Insane if you think this trip will be doable! I have a hard time going an hour in the car when my daughter was one. The only time I traveled more than an hour was when she was sleeping (meaning night travel only) and even then the max was 4 hrs. She is now almost two and we still don't travel while she is awake because it is too hard on her and way to hard on us. I would plan on flying or not going personally. But if you are truly set on going then do it at night and take turns driving. Good Luck

all these electrical devices being affected. maybe you emit an energy that makes them work, or turns them on. also sounds like that poltergeist thing. as far as something watching you i wouldn't worry about it. maybe our dimension is coming into contact with another one. maybe you might think they're a ghost and they might think you're a ghost. a lot of people sense these things so you're not crazy. just because there's no explanation for something now doesn't mean there won't be one in the future. if you sense a presence, try to communicate with it. ask it what it wants. where is it from and from what year.

its doable i would just leave at night so you can get most of the driving out of the way while your son is sleeping :) then i would also pack lots of snacks and books and toys that your son can play with. good luck and i wish i was going to florida for the winter!

It's definately doable. Just be prepared to make several pit stops. I took a 7 hour drive w/ my 1 year old. When we stoped for gas, lunch, potty breaks, etc, we just planned on staying a little while longer to 'stretch our legs.'
