what are your rights, if someone broke in your home, and your dog attack them trying to protect you? ?
I am not comfortable having a gun in my home. I would much rather have a large dog to protect me and my possessions. What is a person's rights if someone broke in your home and your dog hurt them, or hurt them trying to save my life?

Almost all states have a form of the Castle Doctrine. The castle doctrine allows you to DEFEND YOURSELF WITHOUT THE NEED TO RETREAT when inside your home.
If you defend yourself with a dog or a gun.... who cares? DEFEND your gift of life.

It depends on the state. And the circumstances. Fluffy the killer Dobie maiming the pizza guy is different then the dog protecting you during an attack. Most laws provide that a certain amount of protection is afforded to anyone on your property be they invited or trespassing. Someone can not build a pit under a hidden trap door in their yard because they don't want people going through their yard for instance. Laws also provide that human life is more valuable then your stuff. Can they sue you? Sure. Anyone can sue for almost anything these days. Will they win is the question. At least put up the 'beware of dog signs'. personally i think there is something wrong with the law when we have to worry about the health and welfare of the guy who is stealing the TV.

Your dog was only doing what comes natural to it. You and it will be ok. Legally.
