I think videos made it all about the image and not about the music. All it takes is a slick video, and you're a star, whether or not you have actual talent.

In the days when you only had radio, and an album cover, the only way to judge a musician was by their music alone. Now we have the MTV Video Awards, where bands are honored as if they were film makers.

Don't get me wrong, I grew up on MTV and have great memories of watching the Top Ten Video Countdown on Saturdays with my sister, waiting to see if Van Halen beat out Michael Jackson for the number one spot. But, as the Buggles said..."Video Killed The Radio Star"

I really love rock music and many other kinds of music as well. However I could do without videos, unless it is live concert footage. Most music videos look like cartoons or video games. I liked them when they first started becoming popular but they are old hat now. For the most part, I prefer just hearing my stereo but I do love live concert videos of my favorite artists, providing the sound is good.

To answer the question, I think music videos have been detrimental to rock music because MTV only wants to give airplay to rappers these days. I'm glad I grew up with classic rock in the 60's and 70's.

In reality it has made music worse off. Now for a band to be successful it has to look good on TV. Do you think Neil Young or the Allman Brothers would have made it if they were starting out in the video age...no way. All girls need to look like Debbie Gibson and all rock bands need to either have a great looking front man or a great logo...music today is all about how looks can be marketed and not at all about how people play or sound. Overall it has been bad for the expression of new music in the industry.

I think music videos have turned decent bands into mainstream sellouts with a posse of adolescent fangirls & boys. Even mainstreamizing bands like Disturbed (who were tolerable then but not now).

Now when people see "Inside the Fire" on MTV, they think it's the most hardcore thing ever. It's disheartening to see decent bands write songs only for a music video.

Mostly bad. There are some good videos though. Some that come to mind are:

    RHCP - By The Way

    Weezer - Pork & Beans

Foo Fighters - Big Me (Mentos parody)

Otherwise I don't really like videos.

Sadly, when MTV launched their original format, a lot of bands had trouble getting their videos played because they weren't pretty enough for the camera. The one thing I always hated were "concept" videos - I'd rather just watch a video of the band only playing or a live clip.

I don't think it's the music videos, tho I can name quite a few that suck nuts, that have turned the mainstream rock industry bad. It's most defiantly the record company execs. those greedy, greedy bastards.

Videos aren't really good or bad for the music.

Some videos really stink and shouldn't be made, while others make a song seem even better.

    It all depends.
