Beta fish on a flower vase as a centerpiece?

I would like to have something alive as a centerpiece for my wedding. I dont want to buy flowers that will die the next day! Also I want guests to have something nice to take home. I am thinking of a plant but if by the wedding is off season (or I cant find enough) I would like to have a Beta fish.

I KNOW that putting a Beta in a vase is terrible, BUT, it will not be worse than any other condition Ive seen Betas in. The vase will be 9 inches (22 cm) http://www.ikea.com/PIAimages/29071_PE103261_S4.jp...

Second of all, I will put stones in the bottom so the feces get filtered.

Is that still not good enough? Do you guys have any ideas of what I can add?

Or any other living centerpieces?

Thank you!!!

Please don't get sucked into the betta-in-a-vase route, you won't be able to monitor these fish the whole way through the wedding. You won't be able to stop little Johnny pouring his coca cola in the vase because he looks thirsty, or cousin Tom drinking it down in one as a drunken dare.

Stick to flowers as a centrepiece, it's far better for a state of mind!! A wedding I was at last weekend had small wire bird cages covered in flowers with two glass doves hanging in the middle, very pretty. Fake things are better than little living wriggly things!! And definitely better when Uncle Derek's new girlfriend turns out to be a member of PETA and kicks up a right stink. Your guests won't want to take fish home with them, it's unfair to assume they would anyway.

OH and there are plenty of flower options for every season, just ask a green-fingered friend or relative.

This isn't a great Idea. I love betta's bread them, have them now. They are a beautiful fish.

Now if you are really set on having this as a centerpiece, I would make an announcement and state that anyone that in fact does NOT want to take home a tropical fish please see someone who is a dedicated person that will take any un-claimed fish. Since often a centerpiece goes to someone at the table that wins a "contest" this might not be a great idea with a living animal/pet.

That being said, depending on the group there - if there are a lot of younger kids/teens they might like having a new little pet.

    Pretty idea: yes

Great idea for fish lovers: no

If you can find a common ground that would be perfect :)

I don't think it's a good idea. Gravel does not filter the waste. Only a filter does. In fact, gravel or substrate in a set up like that is even worse, because it trap the waste/food down there and will cause ammona to build up.

What will you do with all the bettas that are left over that people don't want? They can't survive like that very long, they need a temperature around 78°F, which most rooms aren't kept that warm. And, most people don't know how to proprley care for them, which makes it a cruel gift.

I can't think of anything other then some fancy plant-which I know you don't want to use, use lucky bamboo or something that won't die the next day.

    its not big enough

    there is no heater

no filter (gravel is not a filter)

so all the fish will do is sit on the bottom looking sad

i dont think it would look good

    ANIMALS ARE NOT DECORATIONS

    maby get the same vase

    add bottled water

add a substrate (sand would be nice)

add a live aquarium plant (you can get these at a petshop) i think baby tears plant would look nice or maby java sword or hygrophila polysperma

maby add some shrimp and a blue mystery snail (i dont know if they eat plants or not)

make sure you have a suitable home for afterwards.

Stones don't filter the waste, they simply trap them.

    Filters filter the waste.

It's a bad idea to have living animals as centerpieces at weddings unless you're going to provide the PROPER care for them later on.

The proper care for a Betta is 5 gallons with a filter and heater. So unless you can't get those, then don't get the Betta.

I think it will be okay, just make sure that you are removing some of the old water and replacing it with fresh every day. If you are using water out of the tap, make sure to let it sit out in a jar or container and leave it uncovered for at least 24 hours to get rid of the chlorine
