I would actually use both. Create a special whistle for your dog that it can recognize, but also use its name. My dog has both, but after a while I found she got a little to used to hearing her name, and used her "selective hearing" to choose when to obey. The whistle still works well though because it means only one specific thing. But names are more personal and they still have to know to come with a name as well.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aNQcN

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

I personally would use there name it all depends on how u say there name when ur either playing with them and correcting them the "deeper" voice is what I use for my three pits when they have done something they wrong they know the difference then when I'm playing with them. a name is more personal and they know when u say there name ur talking to them not another animal. As far asa whistle goes I personally never used one my dogs listen better to there name and know when I mean business. Every dog is different tho. And its all how YOU want to train them.

Always train on a leash so that you have control. Have treats with you. Start about 4 foot from the dog. Call, direct him to you with treats and the leash. Make a big fuss over him. Then gradually move back. Use a long (15 - 20 foot) leash later on to do the same thing. Ideally, the dog should come to you and sit and you should be able to hold his collar. That way if your dog is out,you can get him to come to you and hold him. You have to make coming to you and really great thing. Use your best little high happy voice. Call his name and then 'come'. Do it once and make sure he comes to you (hence the leash). Do NOT keep repeating the command. When you do, he knows he really doesn't have to do it. You may have to repeat this 10 times a day for weeks, but it will work.

    HI sbc,

Use both the name and whistle My Friend. He or she will learn faster in my opinion.
