Seriously, even the department he heads is made up. "Diagnostic medicine" is just plain silly. All physicians diagnose. It's what we do.

No internist would be allowed to do surgery - we don't even tell them where the OR's are in real life.

Probably Medicine doctor because all of his patients are looking for some kind of cure for something. He never knows exactly what is wrong with the patient so he has to figure it out. Not sure though.
