Is it true that if Chicago children stay home from school on the 1st day, that the schools risk losing funds?

Update:

I love my city too!

There is a call to protest the public school system by having kids stay home on the 2nd of September (first day).

I'm just curious if it will have negative connotations

I don't know how it is in Chicago, but I was a teacher in Alabama for 25+ years, and our school's funding was based on averge daily attendance. So, if kids weren't there, we got less funding.

There was also something important as to the number of students enrolled on the first day of school, but it has been awhile and I'm not sure exactly how that affected funding. It may have had more to do with the number of teacher units the school would be allotted.

Hope this helps. PS - My family and I love your city!!

All schools lose money if students do not attend. Not just in Chicago and not just on the first day.
