When do you pick a pink banana?

We have little pink bananas in our yard.

1.) When do you pick them?

2.) Can you eat them?

Thanks!

If you have the pink banana called Musa Veluntina, it's considered edible by some

... but there are others who consider it to be non-edible.

When it's ripe, it'll split open & is known as a 'self-peeling' banana.

When ripe, the edible, pink bananas of Musa Veluntina (also called Heliconia paradise, velvet pink banana, hairy banana, baby pink banana, guineo rosado) with a velvety skin split open at the tip and reveal the white flesh:

"These small banana plants are typically used in the landscape for their ornamental appeal as M.velutina fruits are pink and fuzzy. However, more than an ornamental, the fruits are actually edible if you don't mind working around the seeds. They will peel themselves back when ripe... If you catch them at the right time (you have only maybe a day or so to catch it when ripe, opened, and unspoiled), you'll notice the best flavor."

"How do they taste like? Unfortunately this is an ornamental plant and the bananas are non-edible. Too bad!"

There are several types of pink bananas listed here:

Check with the agricultural extension in your area to find out for sure what type of banana plant you have & if it is considered edible before eating any bananas from your plant.

Good luck!!! Hope this is helpful.

If you are talking about the pink banana squash, they are best eaten when they are about 6 inches long. although you can harvest when they are much larger. if you peel the skin, because it becomes hard as the squash gets bigger. Pink banana squash never actually gets pink, at leats mine never have, they start out a very pale yellow and turn to a bright yellow as they ripen. I really like their flavor, it is somewhat like crook neck with a more buttery-taste. The outside of the squash is very soft and easily scratch, so as you harvest set them aside where other vegi will not scratch them. You can also harvest them when they are very large, cut in half(long) spoon seeds out and bake them in the oven for about 45 minutes at 350. They are delicious. Hope this is helpful!
