Impossible atomic number?

Could someone please tell me why 16.55 would be an impossible atomic number

    Atomic number=number of protons. So, since atoms and their subatomic particles are indivisible (cannot be divided), you cannot have .55 of a proton.

    Atomic number means the number of protons in an atom. It is probably obvious just given the definition.
