I like Lee Mead's version. It has more impact if you watch it than if you just hear it, though. It's all very theatrical. Which makes sense, as he's a musical theatre star. Apart from breathing in the middle of a word (tut, tut) it's really rather good, I reckon.

I have not actually heard any covers for the song. I really do love the original though, and I doubt anyone could top it. I would be interested in seeing what other people say though, and possibly checking the covers out.

I found a few covers but it appears like Blondie, R.E.M. and a young group called Quasi and Elliot Smith had the best covers in my opinion. Here you can check them out yourself:

Dead Moon although I don't know if they've recorded it on any of their albums. Then again, noone on here has probably listened to any of their albums either.
As far as other covers go though, Townes van Zandt's cover of Dead Flowers is brilliant.
