Help! I have two unweened kittens.?

They were separated from their mother. Should I just feed them kitten food or is there a formula I can put together to feed them. They are working on the kitten food but is it too solid for them to deal with yet?

Update:

I do know not to give them cows milk but wondered if their kitten food needed to be supplemented with formula. Thanks

Update 2:

Daelda- I actually do have a lab/dacshound mix who seems to be happy to keep the little fellas clean. Thanks

    How old are the kittens?

If they are 3-4 weeks, the might be able to be weened. Before then, you must bottle feed them with a cat-bottle and kitten milk-replacer. This is available at pet stores or large grocery stores.

If the kittens are over 3-4 weeks, try to get them to eat solid food. I always ween kittens on a

50/50 mix of Plain Rice Baby Cereal and Turkey Baby food (in the human baby section of the grocery). Mix it with warm water (not too warm!) to the consistency of thick oatmeal or cream of wheat. Take a little on your finger and try to get some in the sides of the kittens mouth. They might want it, they might not. Keep trying for a few days.

    They will eventually want it.

Put it on a plate and on the floor so if they decide they do want it, they can try to eat on their own.

Gradually add in soft canned food to the Rice Baby Cereal mixture and by about 6 weeks, they can eat regular canned cat food.

They won't be ready for dry food until about 8 weeks.

I've had luck feeding newborns plain yogurt. I've used a toy doll bottle. You can also dip a cloth in the 'kitten milk' and let them suck on it.

There's another issue though; If they are very young, you will need to wipe their butts with a warm, wet cloth after they eat to stimulate them to poop. Their mother does this when she cleans them (we actually had a dog who took on this job; it was hilarious)

it depends how old they are.

at about 4 weeks they become interested in food, and can survive if you provide kitten food. if they eat it, then they are old enough to eat, because before that, they would just ignore the food.

before 4 weeks old, you have to give them kitten milk that you can buy in a pet store (not cow milk!).
