CHECK ENGINE light on Ford Ranger?
I have a 1994 Ford Ranger and the Check Engine light keeps coming on while I accelerate quickly or drive up a hill. It goes off after I slow down. The truck runs fine otherwise. Any ideas?

in my experience, ive seen most ford trucks have 3 main reasons the check engine light comes on. 1. gas cap is loose or the rubber seal on it is bad. 2. O2 sensors either picked something up or are going bad. 3. the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve is bad. ive seen more ford trucks have EGR valve problems than most any other vehicle. your local auto parts store should be able to read the code for you and tell you why the light is on. the check engine light comes on for either an emissions issue or in extreme cases the transmission. another alternative is to disconnect your battery for about 5 minutes. this will clear all the information from the cars computer. the light will go out. if it stays out, then it was just a one-time reading and all is well now. but if it comes back on, then it needs to be checked out because something is definitely going on

You will need to get a scanner and pull a code. It will tell you whats wrong. You didn't mention what engine size, but the 3.0 and 4.0 liter have 2 O2 sensors, I am not sure about the 4 cyclinders.

Go to Autozone or Advanced Auto and have them read the codes stored on the engine. Then you will at least know more about what you are dealng with. Start there it may be something you can fix with thier guidance. If all else fails.......... add Marvels Mystery Oil to gas and oil as directions indicates.

Post the numbers from the check engine light, that will tell us a lot.

O2 sensor, but don't just change it. You need to check a lot of things. Fuel pressure, injectors, ignition. The O2 may go out of it's range due to a rich or lean mixture under load.

Go to Autozone and have them check the engine codes with their obd2 scanner. That should tell you what is wrong.

if it runs ok, then it,s probably the 02 sensor.
