I got the same as Gnomon. But i just wanted to add that the number of chromosome pairs does not actually increase as the animal gets bigger or as it gets smaller. Nor is it based on how complex the animal is. while we humans have 46 pairs Amoeba, the single celled life form has 50 and the record holder is a species of fern known as the Adder's Tongue Fern which has approximately 1440.

Elephants have 56 chromosomes, which means that each cell in an elephant has 56 chromosomes.
I can't find an exact number for a Blue Whale but it is either 42 or 44.
