i have an akita and she is so gentle when children come to visit, she literally stands there and doesn't move while they hang off her. it does depend on their personality, as they are VERY stubborn dogs to train, but really wonderful pets. If you raise one around children, they should be fine. Again though, they are immensely strong and very stubborn so i would advise you getting one if you have plenty experience with dogs

Akitas are a very good family dog. They are friendly and patient with children. Buying from a professional breeder is essential as dog genetics and breeding is getting messy and uncontrolled - so please do your research and find a reputable breeder of Akitas and when selecting a puppy bring your children aswell to connect with the puppy, its a dog for the whole family so everyone should be there to select the dog. As someone else said, Akitas are not a breed for novice owners - they are very physically strong aswell so this would need to be taken into consideration. I will also correct another post that was made - Akitas were originally bred as bear hunting dogs in Ancient Japan - not for minding children - another notable feature of the Akita is that they do not bark, so this is often an interest for families as there is no all night barking coming from your house. The best I can advise is that they are a good family dog and excellent with children - as a breed - but each dog has its own personality so also keep that in mind aswell. Please do your research on the breed and breeders before buying and ensure its an informed, reputable breeder you are selecting the puppy from.
Happy puppy hunting!

Akitas are typically good with children they are raised around. They may be hesitant of other children though. Here is some more information about the Akita: http://www.purebredpups.org/Breed_Info/4/Akita.asp...
Hope this helps!

I own a Japanese Akita Dog. I got him as a puppy when my daughter was one. He is awesome in everyway. He is friendly, loyal, loving and protective. My girl used to pull his ears, poke at him and grap his tail etc. He just moved away when it all got too much for him. My Akita is now nearly three and I have a baby boy who is one. He has never growled or hurt my kids in anyway. My baby boy now does all the stuff my girl did but only harder. He could not care less. He just sits there licking them and they actually go to sleep on him. My boy see's him as a bed. Crazy. He is very protective and has defended me twice in the woods. They are very calm dogs until they feel YOU are being threatened then they turn. On those occassions by dog bared his teeth and growled, barked and lunged forward but did not bite. He just made his presence known and made the possible threat stop in it's tracks. The people in question froze still and dared not move. When I told my dog to stop he did immediately. He was 100% right to protect me both times!...... They do not bark unless provoked. When he barks inside the house we always pay attention. When we look out of the window there is always a commotion. Maybe a drunk or someone in our garden. I have never known a dog to be so calm but so protective at the same time. They look stunning. We always get stopped and people stroke him all the time. He is fine with other dogs and has never attacked. Other dogs have attacked him and he has defended himself. They have up to date always come worse off.. Akita's are not the best fighting dogs but every dog has a right to defend itself. You will not be disappointed with this breed.

i grew up with an akita and she was fantastic. akita's are actually naturally protective of children because they were often bred to watch after children in japan. training is still necessary though!

If you buy one from a reputable breeder who makes temperament a priority and if you train it correctly right from the start & the children behave properly around it , you will have no problems.
They are not the dog for a novice owner though and do require firm handling from day 1.

They are aggressive towards other dogs. Make sure you get one from a reputable breeder
