Shawne Merriman: Biggest idiot in the NFL?

Let me get this straight: 4 individual doctors ALL tell you to have the season ending injury, yet you STILL are going to play? Do you really think your knee won't be exposed playing linebacker; trying to cut and torque that knee to tackle? Not to mention all the physicality that comes with just trying to shed blockers or chase ball carriers?

This guy is ONLY 24, and has a whole career ahead of him. And if he's reasoning is he wants to try and win a Super Bowl this year, he's an idiot. This team is not old: LaDainian Tomlinson is 29 and even after 30 will still be very effective. Philip Rivers is 29. Antonio Gates is 27. Chris Chambers is 28. Luis Castillo, Antonio Cromartie, Quentin Jammer, Shaun Phillips, and Jamal Williams are all under 27. This teams a good amount of time to try and win.

Update:

Vince, are you seriously going to ding me for some mixed up ages? The point is nearly all of the star players are in their prime or just reaching it.

I agree, theres no way in hell you can play Football at the Highest level with two torn Ligaments. Even if he's foolish to play, his performance on the field will be horrible, and Lineman and Runningbacks will Chop Block him on purpose because they know his knees are really messed up. Merriman should just get the surgery like a normal person would, and comeback the following year healthy.

I do not know the man personally. But just because he wants to play does not mean he is an idiot. I will say that he is blinded by his passion right now. He is not thinking clearly. That is certain. In a situation like this, someone else needs to step in and help him. Why not his coaches? Clearer heads need to prevail.

I recently tore my MCL and tore the posterior horn of my medial meniscus in my right knee. The meniscus tear is quite severe. NOT COOL! It sucks big time. I want to run again badly. I love running. I was in football and track when I was younger. I love to play tennis and sports with my friends. I also just run for exercise. After my injury, I have been unable to do anything. I have gone to three doctors and they are all telling me what I do not want to hear. I must have surgery and I will not be able to run any more. After my surgery, the doctors say I should find another kind of non-impact exercise. I should swim or ride a bike. No way, I don't want to do those things. I'm a runner. But why risk further injury? I know I need the surgery or the pain will not go away. So I'm cool with that. As for not running any more, well I have to think a long time about it. It isn't easy. I am a smart man. But emotion clouds judgement sometimes.

Giving up something you love is difficult to do. Sometimes, reason alone is not enough. In Merriman's case, he needs someone else to stop him from hurting himself. There is little doubt that opponents are going to target his knee to see if he will be shy about it. That is the nature of the game. You go for any weakness you think you might be able to exploit. There is no nice guy mentality in this sport. And the human knee is so terribly complicated. There are so many things that can go wrong with it. Once weakened, it is so much easier to further injure it. If there is any chance that he can save his career by having surgery now and losing only just one year rather than every year, then he should do it. Better that then making the worst mistake of his NFL career.

I said it earlier. He may not be an idiot, but he is definitely not thinking clearly right now. The real bad people are the people letting him play.

Let's get some facts straightened out here. Merriman hurt the knee last December during a game and played the rest of the season with problem. So he has already tested the waters and knows what to expect. It would be super tough to not play after Rivers, and Gates who both shoulda missed the playoff game against NE last year with injuries but miraculously played anyway. I know LT left the game early but, he had a very capable backup to fill in. Merriman doesn't want to be considered soft and knows the Chargers will get home field this year if he plays. Home field will = Super Bowl Champs, mark it down.

Is one season really worth risking the rest of your career? If so then Shawne Merriman is a beast. If not then he is a bit slow. We know he is a great player, he doesn't have to prove it by being slow and not having surgery that will save your career in the long run.

Thats what you say if ur lookingat it from the side. But if ur Merriman u want to play and if a doctor says he cud but not reccomends it hes gonna take that. Cuz he loves football.

Merrimam isnt the idiot, the idiot are the chargers cuz dey r the ones dat are supposed to tell him instead of having their franchise 24 year old Lb go out and play and risk his career.

You must love Pain, to play this game!

I agree why play a game where it can end your career rather than sit out half a season or more to milk your injury and get it all back to normal then go on and play for 10 more years

If I were putting an offense together against the chargers I'd go right at him. make him use that torn ACL as much as possible. I'd tell my players to cut block him especially on his left knee. All offensive coordinators will be doing this so I expect him to be gone before the second week.

If Merriman gets the surgery he'll be out a year and it will slow him down so much his career might as well be over anyway. He's doing the right thing by playing on it as long as he can.

Merriman is an idiot. The Chargers coach and/or owners better put their foot down and tell him he's done this year, get the surgery.

Are you seriously going to tell us that four doctors told him to have the season ending "injury"...

Do you mean surgery? I don't believe that any doctor is going to recommend an injury.

To answer your question, the biggest idiot in the NFL is now documented to be Brett Favre...

what a fu**ing loser that douchebag is.
