The most important thing he did was change the worldview of the Revolution and the republic which sprang from it by the simple act of, not once but twice, retiring from public life and handing over the reins of power without any military confrontation. At the end of the Revolution, he talked his officers and men out of storming the Congress and forcing a redress of their grievances, and retired from the field when he could easily have taken power and set himself up as king. Then, at the end of his second term as president-- a term he very nearly didn't run for in the first place-- he retired permanently from public life, thereby showing concretely America's break from the traditions of Europe by not dying in office (as that is typically the only way monarchs leave power).
