Should ObGyn be paid even though he was not present during delivery?

My best friend does not have insurance and she just got a bill for $5000 from the obstetrician who supposedly "delivered" her baby. This doctor didn't actually deliver her baby because he was busy delivering twins in another room. She was attended by a resident and she's already paid the hospital bill. I guess I just don't see how a person should be paid such a hefty amount of money for services he did not rendered just because he was the "attending" doctor on the floor and signed her paperwork. Have any of you experienced a similar situation? Should she complain?

Was the $5,000 for delivery costs of before and after care? I know my 1st OBGYN with my first pregnancy wasn't there for the actual delivery either I had the resident at the hospital but the OBGYN did bill my insurance for providing care and checks prior to delivery and after the delivery. I would question it that's for sure.

OMG! that is disgusting! I will NEVER understand why women have to PAY to give birth!! When I had my daughter the doctor wasn't in the room either. The nurse caught her, so legally she delivered my daughter. That doctor was so mad!! She was so rude when she stitched me up. It was very unprofessional. Anyways the reason she was so rude is, she didn't catch the baby(how dare I not wait to push..LOL) she doesn't get paid. I wonder if the nurse got a bonus though?..not likely. That's why next time I went for a home birth with a midwife. It was awesome! I am doing that for this one as well. They get a salary and are only going to take on as many clients as is safe, not having a ton and not making it there for any of the births.

I do not think anyone should be paid for work they did not do..period!

I would complain! That is ridiculous! She is basically having to pay $5000 for a couple of papers being signed? I would go to the complaint department and if they do nothing or are too wishy washy, tell her to go the Dept of Human and Health Services and file a complaint. They have entire sections that deal with these kinds of problesm and will hire an actual investigation if the complaint seems legit (give proof if possible) Make sure you follow up every other day with the state if she does decide to go that route cause they get a lot of complaints and are busy

Source(s): my mom worked for the Dept. of Health Services and was the manager of the complaint dept. for geriatrics

you will have to ask the doc to explain, but i would guess it is because he would have taken over if something went wrong. the resident is working under his supervision.

if the resident dropped your child, you know you would have sued the doc too, even though he never touched your child.
