LaVeyan Satanism practices?
Ok, this is a serious question and not intended to provoke damnation rants from fundies. So, anyway... I've been looking into LaVeyan Satanism (I'm currently an agnostic) and so far it seems to be the religion that makes the most sense to me. Now I havent read the Satanic Bible yet but from what I understand so far there's really no belief in deities or the supernatural, yet I hear mention of the use of magic. Now if this is a part of the religion, it makes no difference since I still agree with most of the basic principles. However, if anyone knows what they mean by "magic" and what it's used for, I'd greatly appreciate a little extra understanding. Also, any other tidbits of information that anyone might know would also be helpful. Thank you.
patrick: I agree, and so does LaVeyan Satanism. They use Satan as more of a mascot, really. From what I can tell it's less of a spiritual religion and more of a guideline for living your life. That's what attracted me to it.
My yahoo messenger is: trvis1984 if you know anything extra or would like to talk about this subject with me.

from what i understand magic in satanism isnt the same as traditional "magic" of hurling fireballs ect. Its ones way of releasing an emotion as Frau Asher Cat (JPA) Heathen says. E.G you can use the destruction curse, it pretty much means you want to destroy the person or thing when you use it. we all know that what ever your using it on wont be blown into a million pieces but it will help release a lot of your anger towards it, thus making you feel better.
Jondi Dongola this is LaVey satanism NOT Theistic satanism. LaVey satanists do not believe in "god" or the "devil". They believe we are natural beings, self preservation ect. You really need to look at the satanic bible by Anton LaVey before you comment on something you clearly know nothing about. You have no real tollerance for other religions, your mind is a closed one way track. And if you can seriously say that what someone belives in is wrong, then you need to look at yourself.
Jazzie you are misinformed, Theistic satanism is devil worship, THEY worship the christian Devil, LaVey Satanism on uses it as a Mascot, they worship themselves, please before you comment do some sort of research.

I am not a Satanist (LaVeyan or theistic) but I have read the Satanic Bible.
La Vey makes a number of key points. The main one being that "satan" is not an actual entity, but is a metaphor that represents the base urges of mankind.
LaVeyan Satanists reject Theistic Satanism as heresy because they do not, as mentioned above, see "satan" as a deity.
This is a quote made by Peter H Gilmore...
"Satanists do not believe in the supernatural, in neither God nor the Devil. To the Satanist, he is his own God. Satan is a symbol of Man living as his prideful, carnal nature dictates. The reality behind Satan is simply the dark evolutionary force of entropy that permeates all of nature and provides the drive for survival and propagation inherent in all living things. Satan is not a conscious entity to be worshipped, rather a reservoir of power inside each human to be tapped at will. Thus any concept of sacrifice is rejected as a Christian aberration—in Satanism there’s no deity to which one can sacrifice"
There is a "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" philosophy.
I have met many Satanists, both Theistic and LaVeyan, and had some fascinating conversations with them.
They are not the goat sacrificing, virgin deflowering, baby killing monsters that fundamental Christians would have you think. I have some links that you may find useful...

I can't help you with knowledge of the "magic", but Alkaline Trio (at least Matt Skiba and Derek Grant, not sure about Dan) are LaVeyan Satanists. As far as I know, they don't actually attend anything and they definitely don't believe in an actual devil. It is basically just a belief about indulging yourself in pleasures as far as I can tell.
As this answer fits more into the "tidbit" category, I should mention that Alkaline Trio has a song off their first album "Goddamnit!", called "Southern Rock" specifically written by Matt because he saw LaVeyan on TV or something and really liked what he was saying even when he was little. So, maybe you want to check that song out, or not.

You seem closer to Theistic Satanism than LaVeyan. LaVeyan Satanists don't really believe in any sort of god or an afterlife. They worship themselves as gods, and believe their own selfish and carnal desires come first.

answer: magic is raising energy and sending it out towards a specific goal. For example: if you're really brassed off at someone, do a ritual - really raise the anger and send it out, getting rid of it. Then move on rather than letting it simmer and control your life and harm you.
That's LaVey magic (and magic in general)
You can find the Satanic Bible on Amazon.com used books for next to nothing (I have two). If still drawn to it, pick up the Satanic Rituals and the Devil's Advocate.
Save getting the Satanic Witch for later - its very dated and boring.

Gabe is referring to theistic Satanism. If you do explore JofS, go in with open eyes and a bit of disbelief. A belief in aliens, Nazi theology and a refusal to reject animal sacrifice is VERY troubling to other Satanists, especially the willingness to condone sacrifice and racism.

I'd also like to know the specific details, as I only have a basic understanding of what they are about, what they consider sins, etc. I've been looking into it as well, since it seems to make a lot of sense. That being said, I'd also need to know more about it first. So star for you! :)
EDIT: Jondi, you do realize they don't actually worship Satan? He is viewed as a metaphor by them, not an actual deity to worship.

Magick does not necessarily include anything supernatural, though it can. It's all in how you view it. I use the 20th Century occultist Dion Fortune's definition, in that magick is the art of changing consciousness in conformity with will.

Just because you don't believe in a real god or devil doesn't mean that there aren't ways to manifest your will. Some people might call this sorcery, I tend to think of it as an activation of one's imagination. Most of this refers to psychodrama enacted to remove barriers we put between ourselves and our desires. Some of it is a lie we perpetuate to craft an image for ourselves. I tend to think that the mind is powerful, and while I have no idea how it works, strong intention does work wonders.
All the best,
