Can you steam rice without a steamer?

I want to cook myself something for dinner so I was thinking rice with red pepper. I'd usually just boil the rice plain but is there a way I can steam it without a steamer?

Update:

Well unfortunately my oven hasn't been woking for some time now so I only have the stove top.

A friend of mine who is Persian (Iranian) steams basmati rice. I've never done it myself, but the Persians certainly do a wonderful job of it.

I've added a link below, untried by me, but you can google the phrase "how to steam basmati rice" and you may find other methods. Give them a try and find one that works for you.

Hints: I know that they soak the rice for some time before cooking, and rinse the starch off. The cooking is in two phases. In the final one, melted butter is put in the bottom of the pot, and the bottom cooks into a crunchy, tasty crust that they call "tadique" or something like that.

    Experiment and have fun! :-)

In a basket? oh bother Steamed Rice Ingredients 1 rice 1 water 1 salt Instructions Let's begin at the beginning. Cooking rice is so simple that I cannot understand why so many people claim to have trouble with it. Nor can I understand how people can buy that instant stuff that tastes like the cardboard box in which it comes. Maybe the box tastes better! Instructions for cooking perfect rice are simple. Use a heavy covered saucepan. For size, figure 1-quart capacity for each cup of rice: 1 cup of rice takes a 1-quart pot; 4 cups, a 4-quart pot. Add 2 cups of water and 1/4 teaspoon salt for each cup of rice. Bring to a boil with the lid off and keep it off for about 3 minutes. Put the lid on the pot and turn the heat to very low. Let it cook for 15 minutes and then turn off the heat. Do not open the lid during this process, and let the pot stand on the burner for another 5 or 6 minutes. You are now ready to serve. HINT: ON COOKING RICE. When cooking rice use a heavy saucepan. If your pans are light stainless steel use a heat diffuser. It will help keep the heat even on thin pans. Remember, rice doubles in bulk so 1 cup will give you 2 cups, or 4 servings of a normal side dish.

yeah you can buy a veggie steamer it's something that you set on top of a pot of boiling water and place your veggies in to steam them...it might work but the holes may be too big. Here's a link to a picture of what i'm talking about.
