What is the "minus" in a ".jpg-" filename?

How do I open a file with a .jpg- (JPG minus) file extension? I have Photoshop CS2 and Quart xPress 7.31, but neither one seems to know what this is. I'd like to modify the file (it's part of my website, that I own but another guy built, and I don't know if he'll tell me), and the first thing I ran up against is this strange file type.

PS. I know what a .jpg is, and I can open one of those, easily enough. It's the "minus" thing that makes no sense...

Update:

When I go look at the filename in XP Home SP2, using the "Details" window, I see the file name (only -- no extension) under the "Name" column, and under "Type" I see "JPG- File" (no quote marks).

Under "Properties," it says "JPG- File"

Renaming it makes no difference. Then it shows it just as filename.jpg.jpg-

Anybody???

You have "hide known extensions" enabled - disable it. Enabling it is dangerous.

As far as the file extension, if it's a jpg file, rename it. (Windows relies on the file extension to tell it what type the file is.) If it's not a jpg file, you'll have to find out what it is. Any file can have any extension - that doesn't mean it's that type of file.

Right and rename the file to

filename.jpg -- eliminating the "-"... there is no such thing as .jpg-

Then it shall work. But do note that renaming the file this may not let windows know that the type has changed. You may need to do a "open as".

Highlight the image file, press F2, remove the minus only, press Enter, click ok to continue on pop up warning. Then try to open it. If the file isn't corrupted, it should open normally.
