Can anyone show or explain to me a reason to believe in the existence of a God?
I am currently an atheist, but I am only looking for answers. This is a pretty important one IMO. Please respect me and my beliefs as I respect yours.
Some things that you should know about me before answering:
-I am Atheist Agnostic. (I do not believe in God and think it is currently impossible to prove or disprove him. With what I know now, in my opinion, he does not exist).
-I was raised Roman Catholic.
-I believe in evolution and abiogenesis. They make perfect sense to me.
-I have had no personal experiences indicating the existence of a God, and telling me about your PERSONAL experiences will do little to convince me otherwise.
-I do not think the Bible is divinely inspired or sacred, so please do not use it as support.
-My decision was not sudden or uninformed. I became an atheist gradually after several years of inner reflection, thought, and research.
I see no reason to believe in a God because everything that I have seen only seems to hint otherwise. I figured maybe you guys could help me.
Edit @ 6:35 day of post:
For everyone telling me to be faithful:
I know what faith is. I believe that faith is blind. To me it seems like faith is believing in something without any good reason to, besides some priest or your parents telling you to.
Also, NO my mind is not made up. If i were stubborn and ignorant i wouldn't have questioned my religion in the first place. This is what i believe and until evidence, reason, or someone else can convince me otherwise, it will remain how it is. I asked you this because i figured that theists must know something that I do not.

Wow, look at all these stupid answers that totally miss the point of your question. All definitions or concepts of deity are false because a god is not a thing of form and substance and thus it is true to say, does not "exist" however matter and energy do exist and as Einstein said matter can neither be created or destroyed, it is merely rearranged. That is to say all things are eternal but changeable. The gods can be found in the sphere of non-form, non-bieng, the emptiness of pure potentiality and endless possibility of unfolding form.
So,
1. Creation continually unfolds and is without beginning or end.
2. form is impermanent, non-form is eternal
3. a god can be reasoned but not proven because we live and think by forms, time and concepts of substance and energy.
4. The gods are the underlining intelligence, creativity and forces that give motion to the living dynamic interconnected universe we live in. Science can explain all that exists, the mystic strives to understand the sacred space that contains it all.
Hope that gives you something to ponder and consider.

Ok well you asked what reason you should believe in God for and i'm gonna answer it. I am a christian and i have doubts about God alot but the things that usually make me believe again is when i think about the devil because there are proof of excorcisms. another thing i think of is that evolution has no more proof then christianity does(thats not a slam on your religin this is just a point im trying to make since you want answers).I know you said the bible won't change anything for you but if you ever take the time to read it or anything you'll see that the stories in it are so creative that i couldn't really imagine a dude just saying im going to write this book and trick everybody. It is a very long and complex book and i believe that it is true. In my religion it says that you should spread the word to people who don't believe. You said you were raised catholic and most christians say that catholic religion has false things to it because in christianity you only worship God and Jesus Christ well in the catholic religion you also worship Mary and mary isn't holy. I know that the bible can seem far fetched at times but evolution is too. I really hope you take the time to read the bible even if you don't believe in it because if you at least give it a try what could it hurt. i'm telling you that earthly life is very short and i think that you should know that the consequences for not devoting your life to God are very painful and you burn in fire alone for eternity. What can you lose if you try and give christianity i shot i implore you to start reading the bible.

here is an example lets say you saw a painting there had to be a painter to it because it can't paint its self. look at the planets how is earth perfectly placed so we don't burn up or freeze. also foods an apple has a grove for your thumb also a banana has a tab so you can peel it off and eat the insides. no offense but evolution has been proven wrong . like in 1912 someone found a skull and jawbone that looked part man part monkey they said it was the missing link "Piltdown Man" and said it was over a million years old they thought they proved the bible wrong but in 1953 they proved that it was a trick the skull was 600 years old and the jaw was 500 and it came from a monkey not a man . another thing they dug up was a tooth they called it "Nebraska Man" but it was latter discovered it was just a pigs tooth. Know one can prove that evolution is true (no offense) because its not true there is a God how come our planet is the only livable one with air and water and minerals and wood no scientist can make something out of nothing. And also what about the dead sea scrolls that were found . i think i've said enough good luck God bless and choose christ

yes i can give you plenty of things!
1) look all around you... do you see the grass on the ground... the tress planted exactly where they are.. the food you eat...how did all of this get here?... how does your body work..? everything inside it? how can a baby grow inside a woman like it does..? how is everything put in its place?
2) things such as world cotastrophies God doesn't put that in our lives .. the devil does.. and what alot of people don't realize is that Yes there is a God BUT there is also a devil and he is powerful also! he can make things happen too... and you no everyone that dies... dies for a reason God puts us here on this earth and he takes us out.. it's the circle of life.. you will die one day because God has a greater plan for your life i know it..! there is soo much that can be explained and you sound like you want to know about him... go to a church even a non denomiational church and ask questions people will be more then happy to asnwer them for you...the devil also puts temtation and evil and sin in our lives.
3) may i also say ... that there are people out there that say they are christains but when it comes down to it there actions show otherwise... and those people are the reason for non believer but you have to stay strong and follow your heart come to know christ and you will be forgiven for all your sins and spend forver in the house of the lord!
thats the best advice i can give you.. im not a precher or anything so thats why i think you should go to a higher power like a precher.. and they will bea ble to answer any question you throw at them!
good luck and i will pray for you!

I'm not sure why you are asking this question because it sounds like you have already made up your mind. However if you choose to believe in God its just that Believing. It's not necessarily about the hard evidence or how we came to be human its about belief. I agree that the bible isn't divine because if you look at how many interpretations of it there are its no longer the exact word of God but the stories contained in it and the philosophies ( especially from the new testament) i feel are what you should truly seek from the bible. I must say I am one who felt like I didn't believe for a time but then I discovered it wasn't God I wasn't believing in but Organized religions, Especially ones as strict as Roman Catholic, I think they focus more on the rules then the teachings. But in the end the choice is yours to follow.

I am not really sure there is a way to make someone believe in God. It is really a personal relationship that you have to develop on your own. You need to have one of those spiritual experiences that make you think "hey, I am not alone. I feel God's presence with me". It's really hard these days for people to do this though, with all the negativity in the world. You just need to try and see the beauty in the world and be open to His love. You will find him when you're ready. You sound like a very intellegent person, someone who is driven by logic. I too am very logical, but also am very spiritual. Have you ever wondered why you can't explain everything with logic though? That's when you need to let your spiritual side take over. These are just words to you though. No one can really make you "see the light".

I honestly doubt that anything anyone says is going to change your mind, since you seem to be pretty hard-set on not believing in God. You said you do not want to hear personal testimony, so obviously the story about how I went from believing, to denying Him, to believing again is of no interest to you.
That is really all I have to offer you - my own experiences, or "close encounters of the third kind" with God - and all that most others can offer because you're right, there is no empirical evidence of the existence of a God. You can't see, hear, taste, touch, or smell Him, you can't quantify Him, He can't be hypothesized and tested in a laboratory experiment that can be replicated again and again... so by scientific terms, God doesn't exist.
Fortunately there is a world beyond science, a world where empiricism holds no salt. It is one of those things - either you believe in the "spirit world" or the realm beyond us, or you don't. Some people believe because like myself, they've had first-hand encounters with "paranormal" things that science can't explain. Others believe because, like the UFO poster dutifully hanging in Mulder's office states, "I want to believe." And some don't at all.
I have had personal, empirical experience with the spirit of God - something I could feel, something I could hear, something I could see. I think He knew I have a doubter's heart and I asked Him in prayer to show me, to give my heart what it needed. I asked, and I received. If you ask, really just open yourself up and ask God to show you the path, you might just receive. Good luck.

you and i are very smiler on theological belief's
-creationism and evolution do not contradict, i believe that one supports the other
the founding fathers of america made the constitution to be able to change and morph
don't you think the supposed Creator of the universe would be just as smart as they and make it so his creation could change
- there is no proof or disproof for the existence of what main stream christians call "god"
just like quantum physics, you cannot prove or disprove its existence
but this is what i choose to believe:
perception is Truth
god exists, simply because one person believes in him
to that person, god exists and there is no other Truth
god can be a symbol: a reason to stand up for what you believe is right
god can be an explanation: to give yourself motivation for existence
god can also be used for bad: to be used as a weapon of fear
god can tie people together: they worship the same deity and have the same morality so therefore they must band together
so god can be a very good thing
and a useful tool
people who believe in god tend to live longer
their minds are at ease
and their body does not stress out
because they have an answer
i believe that the christian morals are something that everyone should take to hear
and in its most simplest form:
do unto others as they would do unto you"
its not about trouth
trouth is what you make of it
if you dont beleive in god
and are content
so be it
just learn to be happy
and dont take an ancient book litteraly
i would also suggest learning the morals and history of other philosophical schools:
peganism
and
philisophical satanism
dont meddle in theological satanism

Hmm. This might sound stupid, but I've prayed for unlikely things several times and my prayers were answered. Not that this would change YOUR mind about God. Just yesterday, my husband got a really bad cold that everyone in my house has had. Everyone had it for around 3 days. It was his first day yesterday, and I prayed that he would get better by morning because we can't afford for him to miss any days of work this month. This morning, he was perfectly fine. I was actually in awe because everyone else had it several days and his had just began the day before. Of course, atheists will call this coincidental...but call it what you will, i believe my prayer was answered. And which God do I pray to? I don't know! That one that listens I guess. This is just ONE time my prayers have been answered. I can think of other ones just as specific...like when my cv boot on my car was bad and I prayed I just made it to the garage that was fixing it...the man there told me after he fixed it that he didn't have any idea how I even made it to the garage as bad as it was...coincidence? maybe...maybe not....

I can see why you may think that... but have you ever stopped to think about what goes on in the universe. Perhaps the big bang did happen, but what caused the big bang... what caused that particular series of events to happen?
You were raised Roman Catholic. Shouldn't their beliefs have made some impact on your life? How grim is it to think that nothing happens after death? Why not instead of questioning Christian beliefs you question Atheist beliefs? Perhaps they are wrong. Humans are super intelligent compared to the other species on this planet. And for some reason, in the early phases of social evolution, they thought something greater was out there...
If you can, please tell me what you think the meaning of life is. Is it to die in order to support future generations of species? Or is it some sort of natural elimination process? Are you just going to die and be left behind? Look at how advanced we are. Something had to have helped us... a greater being...
Most atheists become what they are because they are stubborn. They want answers. Does the story of God and Jesus answer everything? No. But neither does evolution. I have filled my answer with questions for you about your beliefs. Can you answer them all? Questioning arouses more questions. Nothing can answer them all...
