Foreshadowing is something, symbol, event or whatever, that shows what will happen later in the story.
Ex: The main character sees two dead animal, a road kill,
then later in the story the main character has a phone call that his parents died in a tragic car accident.

A character always has chest pains in the beginning of the book - foreshadows a possible heart attack.
A character might come across a weapon in the beginning of the story - a possible foreshadowing of a violent scene!

An example of foreshadowing might be when a character displays a gun or knife early in the story. Merely the appearance of a deadly weapon suggests terrible consequences later on.
