"...our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honour."

    Edit:

"Our lives" means that if they lost the war for independence, they'd be hanged for treason.

"Our fortunes" means that they were men of property, and most would suffer financial losses, or even ruin, during a long and costly war with Britain. "Fortune" also meant luck, or fate, so this also meant they were gambling not just their finances but their entire futures on the outcome.

"Our sacred honour" means that they knew they were doing something radical and outside the rules, daring to abandon all the old ways of running a government for the sake of their principles. In pledging their honor, they acknowledged that they realized the profound significance of this, that they were serious and honorable men who were taking such a drastic step only after very careful thought for the consequences. They were stating that they were willing to risk not only their lives but, even more important, their reputations as honorable men.

They died, eventually. Jefferson and Adams became Presidents, Franklin was an Ambassador, Hancock became a Governor. Many had successful careers. Ceasar Rodney, a True Hero, rode all the way to Philadelphia from Rhode Island to vote while he wasquite ill. When the votes were cast, he rode all the way back home and died. The man did his duty.
