The long number is the card number, it should only be 16 digits long though (4 groups of 4 numbers)

ETA I found out that when these 18 digit hsbc cards came out they caused loads of problems because websites only had space for 'normal' 16 digit card numbers. Maybe the particular website you are trying to use isn't set up to use all 18 digits?

Your card should have first: a 6 digit number. The last 2 digits are the first 2 digits of the issuing branches sort code eg ****40.

after this is a 12 digit series which contains the remaining 4 numbers of your sort code eg: 3518********. the remaining numbers are your account number.

The signature strip on the back of the card will show the last 4 digits of your account number, followed by a 3 digit security number.

If you buy anything over the internet (ensuring that the site has 'https' in the address line) they will ask for the security code. Without it, they won't let you complete the application form.

Along the bottom of the card will be the sort code, followed by a 9 digit card number. If you have to fill in an on-line application form, ensure that you select Maestro, and the system should also ask for the issue number.

The security number is that 3 digit code on the back of the card near the signature strip. If you do not have that 3 digit code, then your card is just a debit card and not a card that has Visa/MC qualities and you won't be able to use it online.

Is the card number a sequence of six numbers a space, then a sequence of 12 numbers? If so, heres what they mean: first six digits: digits one to four are unique to the card digits five and six are the first two digits of your sort code second set of twelve digits digits 1 to 4 are the rest of your sort code the remainder is your account number. If you memorise your sort code which is very easy to do, then memorise your account number which is just like remembering a phone number all that leaves is the first four digits - memorise that and you can quote the whole 18 digit number in one go just recall the following Unique code (1234) Sort Code (01-23-45) Account Number (12345678)

HSBC have a weird system where the give your card a number other than the normal Meastro/Visa code followed by our sort code and account number. The card number is nine digits long and can be found at the bottom of your card, below your name. At least it is on mine.

If your card number is made from two groups of numbers, then this is actually your card number.

the 18 digit is the code that identify the bank (first 4 digit), the sort code (6 digit) and your bank account number (8 digit)

The card number is the one on the bottom of the card ( 9 digit)
