Question about swap file and RAM?

Why, if you have more than enough space in RAM, does an OS still use the swap file? Wouldn't putting everything in the RAM help with performance?

It would. But few people have enough memory to avoid a swapfile. There are hacks available to force the core windows component to be written to ram. That way the system is faster.

I really don't know, but I have 4 gigs of RAM and placed my swap file on to my 2nd hard drive and noticed that even my video card added more memory from the swap file. I want to know as well how this works. I'll find out more about this.

the actual chance of you having enough ram to run every program simultaneously are slim to none

swap file is used to store data that is not currently required in ram.

so for example if you minimized your web browser, then went running several 3d programs then played a few games etc. the data required for your web browser will be cached to swap file, as it will allow other programs to use the memory
