Are my dogs safe in my backyard?
I have a black Toy Poodle and a gray Yorkie Poo, both about 10lbs. We recently moved outside of town in a rural area of the Arizona desert. I have spotted hawks on my way to work off the interstate, but never anything larger than a raven in the vacinity. There is nothing but desert behind us, though our yard is about 45'x30' and is blocked off by a 6' solid wall. Should I fear hawks and owls mistaking the pooches for food, or can they even see them in the yard? Lot's of internet research returned little. Right now we are outside with them to keep an eye out for other dangers (found a tarantula in the back yard on Wed.), but will either my wife or I be enough to keep watchful eyes and ears away?
***We don't have any natural disasters in AZ, just Rattlesnakes, Scorpions, Black Widows, Tarantulas and such to watch for (all of which I've seen near our new home)***

Large birds of prey may also hunt small domestic animals, including dogs, cats and chickens, especially during raptors’ winter migration period from September to April.

Oh, the hawks can see the dogs all right. They hunt small rodents and can see those from quite a distance. I wouldn't leave the dogs out in the yard by themselves unless they're in an enclosure with a roof on it. Even if the dogs are too big for your local birds of prey to make off with, which I wouldn't to bet on, they could do some damage trying. Inexperienced owls have been known to try and attack people, me among them, not quite realizing the size of what they're going for until they're right on it..

Your dogs should be safe in your backyard when you are there. However, hawks and other birds of prey have been known to snatch small dogs as they were hiking off leash with their owners and I assure you they certainly CAN see the dogs in the yard with their bird's eye view so I wouldn't ever leave them unattended in the yard if I were you.

of course you should always keep an eye out for them. they are still small enough to get scooped up. just make sure you or your wife or someone is always with them when they are in the yard and just keep a watchful eye out...yiu never know
