Can I change my xbox 360 profile into an xbox live account?

Question

My dad has an xbox 360, and while technically it's his, I use it more than he does. I've been playing for quite some time now and, although I currently do not have xbox live, I plan to get it soon, which leads me to my question: Is it possible for the regular xbox 360 profile that I have to become an xbox live silver or gold account? As many could probably guess, I want the same account due to my gamerscore and number of achievements, which are 4345 and 191 respectively. I have worked so very hard to attain my current status so any answers would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Sign in using your account (the one you want to go LIVE)
On the XBOX Live Blade select Join XBOX Live
When asked to pick a gamertag, there's an option to use your existing account, select that and your account will be upgraded to an XBOX Live one and you'll keep all your progress

First off, to answer your question, a regular xbox 360 account can be changed into a xbox live account.Everything on your account will stay the same (accept you will have xbox live) none of your achievements or gamerscore will be affected.

 Well to set this up, you will need either the cable that allows you to connect to a modem or you'll need a wireless connector (round 'bout £50) Then you'll need to go in to the xbox live blade (on the dashboard) and click join xbox live. you have to go through a registration proses and pay £40 a year for xbox live gold (online play) or for free silver (market place, friends and chat and IM)
