Math problem for my 101 math. HELP!?

A 17ft piece of string is cut into two pieces so that the longer piece is 2ft longer than twice the shorter piece. Find the length of both pieces.

Anyone who can answer my last math problem gets an easy 10pts. Thanks i did most of the problems but time is running out, and math isnt my best subject.

    Let x represent the length of the shorter piece.

    The shorter piece (x) + the longer piece = 17

    Now you know that the longer piece is 2 feet longer than 2*shorter piece (x)

    So the longer piece is 2 + 2x

    Now just put this all together to find x

    (x) + (2x + 2) = 17

    x + 2x + 2 = 17

    3x = 15

    x = 15/3

    Therefore x = 5 feet (this is the length of the shorter piece)

    Substitute this value of x = 5 into the equation for the longer piece to find it's length.

    2 + 2(5)

    =2 + 10

    =12

    So the shorter piece is 5', and the longer piece is 12'.

    Hope that helps :o)

  • Let x represent the shorter piece. The larger piece will be 2x + 2, since it's 2 feet longer than twice the shorter piece.

    Add x plus 2x + 2 and set it equal to 17, the total length of the piece of string at the beginning and solve for x.

    x + 2x + 2 = 17

    3x + 2 = 17

    3x = 15

    x = 5

    The shorter piece is 5 feet long, the larger piece is 2(5) + 2 = 12 feet long.

    x+ 2x + 2 = 17

    3x + 2 =17

    3x = 15

    x = 5 is the shorter piece.

    5*2+2 = 12 is the longer piece

    5ft + 12ft = 17ft

    x + 2x + 2 = 17

    3x + 2 = 17

    3x = 15

    x=5

    Shorter piece is 5 feet long.

    The longer piece is 12 feet long, 2 feet longer than twice the shorter piece.

    short piece = x

    long piece = 2x+2

    therefore:

    x + 2x +2 = 17

    3x+2 = 17

    3x +2 -2 = 17 - 2

    3x = 15

    3x/3 = 15/3

    x = 5

    Therefore short piece is 5

    and

    long piece is 2(5) +2 = 12

    x + (2x+2) = 17

    3x + 2 = 17

    3x = 15

    x = 15/3 = 5

    5 and 12

    your problem can be represented by two linear eqns as,

    x=2+2y and x+y=17

    solving these two you get x= 12ft and y=5ft

    so, longer piece is 12ft and the other is 5ft. Thats it!
