It definitely sounds like it is a few quarts low. Check the fluid level with the engine running, warmed up and on a level surface. Top if off and see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't I doubt a dirty filter is the culprit. You're beyond a flush and fill, you need a front pump i.e a rebuild. Also, if you do a flush and fill make sure the shop flushes the torque converter and cooling lines as well.

It's low on fluid, why not take it in for a trans flush and new filter before you blow it up.
