Does anyone know what the Ankh really means?

Ok, my friend got an Ankh and heart tattoo and she told me it means "love life". Well I wanted to get it with another symbol, but I have been looking around and I had found many websites saying it mean "eternal life", just "life" and many other things. The other symbol I want to get with it is the "infinite" symbol. So, I'm trying to figure out if that would make sense. So, if you can help, please tell me! Thanks!

If you are asking about the ceremonial usage of this by the Ancient

Egyptian priesthood...there are no records extant. At least none

discovered by archaelolgists. The priesthood kept many things in

an oral tradition. And even then each level of Initiation had it's own

level of "knowledge base" unknown to the levels below it.

I think I recall that E. A. Wallis Budge wrote a text (still published

by Dover...but a bit "outdated" per contemporary scholars) on

    hieroglyphs.

If it's not in your local university library...you may have to either

order it from someone like Barnes & Noble or call around to the

archaeology dept of your local university system.

I think the ankh is symbol enough.

If you try to put something referring to "infinity" with it, you're just being redundant. It's like saying "infinite eternal life" or "eternal eternal life." If that's really the message you're trying to get across, I'd stick with just the ankh.

the infinity symbol with it would be a mixture of cultures, but i dont think it really matters... the ankh means life or rebirth or eternal life - depending on the context. so infinity with it would mean eternal life or eternal rebirth (like adapting well, or being optimistic about everything)

It is the key to the realm of the dead, wielded by Anubis, the gatekeeper of the afterlife. In that sense, it is the key to life, since it opens the door to life after death.
