Trouble with my DVD-ROM?

I have a Dell computer that has a PHILIPS DVD+-RW DVD8801 drive. The drive seems to read CD's, but when you open the drive there is nothing in there it is just like the CD was empty. The DVD-ROM drive shows up in device manager and says it has no conflicts with any other hardware. It looks like it is using the windows drivers for the device. I looked for drivers that are specific to the drive to see if it would fix the problem, but that didn't work. Any help would be appreciated.
