    16 less than twice a number is equal to the number can be written as

    2x - 16 = x

    Read it from left to right

    'less than' mean subtraction

    'twice than' means multiplication

    'is' means equals

    Now solve

    2x - 16 = x

    Subtract x from both sides

    x - 16 = 0

    x = 16

    Hope this helps you! Please email for further clarification.

    Translate from words to equations:

    Let "a number" = x.

    "Twice a number" = 2x

    "16 less than twice a number" = 2x-16.

    "is equal to the number" means = x.

    Thus, we have 2x-16 = x

    Move the x to the left side: x-16=0

    Move the 16 to the right side: x=16. This is your answer.

    Check: Twice 16 = 2*16 = 32. 16 less than twice this number would be 32 minus 16 = 16. And 16 is The Number. Yay.

    let the number be x

    so twice the number is 2x

    now according to the question

    2x-16 = x

    2x-x= 16

    x= 16

    so 16 is the required number :)

    Set up an equation:

    X = 2X - 16

    Solve for X by moving the 2X to the other side of the equation:

    -X = -16

    X = 16.

    Proof: 2(16) - 16 = 16.

    If x is your mystery number then:

    2x-16 = x

    2x-2x-16=x-2x

    -16=-1x

    16=x

    2X-16=X

    add 16 to both sides

    2X=X+16

    now subtract x from both sides

    X=16
