Why do we say thank you to bus/taxi drivers?
I came off one earlier, you know how you always get the urge to thank them, i did, walked off and thought to myself........ why do we do that?! Its their job. They should be the ones thanking us! We're the ones that just paid for their wages in overpriced fares

It is called courtesy and it helps the world to run. It costs you nothing and maybe he feels that there is more to the job than just the money he gets. If you do not think the fare is worth it use another form of transport
There is a thing called job satisfaction. It can not be measured and little things like that count

First of all bus and taxi drivers don't determine the fare structure.
Secondly it doesn't matter what job a person fulfils,it is common courtesy to thank people for their efforts-retail assistants, call centre contacts-anyone who has helped you achieve what you set out to do on any particular day.
Yes-I also agree with you in part. When you are a customer you should be thanked for your custom.
It's a two way thing now sadly lacking in today's society.

I always thank the driver on the bus, it's just common courtesy, I got on a bus one day, going to work Ugh! the driver was a middle aged man, every single person who got on or got off was told Good Morning! by him, it made for a pleasant ride, seemed to cheer everyone up. I got his number and e-mailed his office to say how nice he was, got a lovely reply within 20mins. He will get a reccomendation for that.

I think that saying thank you is a polite thing to do, it may not be necessary but it is good manners, on the other hand I do not know why we give taxi drivers, waiters and hotel staff tips, they are paid to do their jobs so why do we have to feel obliged to pay more, my boss does not give me a tip as an extra for doing my job, so why should I pay others.

The same reason you thank the dentist! They've just caused you all that pain and cost you a bloody fortune, yet out of general courtesy we thank them. Even though it is there job, as is the taxi driver driving us to our desired destinations, we do have that obligation to thank them. What would happen if they were non existent??

I have never understood why we tip Taxi drivers for 5 minute trip then travel from one end of the country to the other on the train and Ive never known anyone to tip the train driver.Strange??

It doesn't mean that because it's their job, that they don't deserve a 'thank-you'. I will always thank a waitor/waitress everytime they bring something to my table. It's just common courtesy to say thank-you. It doesn't cost you anything, does it?!?! If you don't want to, then that's your business but I think treating a human being like a human being is the way to go.

Because the occasional thank you makes the job that much more worthwhile. It makes you feel appreciated and that you are doing a good job. It applies in all jobs as well. The number of times i have stayed late to finish a job and my boss has not said thank you. First thought in my head is "sod you, you miserable git"

Well they drive us lot around all the live long day and don't get the chance to get up for a cup of tea like working in an office plus long hours, early mornings/late nights etc.
Plus its polite! x
