Fitted sheets cover the mattress, flat sheets go between you and the blankets (to keep the blankets clean).

    Flat Sheet

the fitted sheets go around the mattress then the flat sheets go on top. Because if you sleep with comforters it's easier (and cheaper) to wash the flat sheets then the comforter. It's a sanitation thing. Also in case it's warm out and you want a little blanket but not too much.

The fitted sheet goes on the bed first. You sleep on top of that one.

The flat sheet goes on second. You sleep underneath it. The purpose of the flat sheet is for hot weather or to provide a buffer between you and the blanket (it's easier to wash a flat sheet than a blanket.)

    Are you European?

In Europe, people usually sleep with a fitted sheet and a duvet--no flat sheet. Duvets are usually covered with a very soft fabric that can be removed and washed, so no flat sheet is necessary.

In the US, the closet thing to a duvet is a down or down alternative comforter covered with a duvet cover. Americans usually use these with a flat sheet out of habit, but if the duvet cover is soft enough it really isn't necessary.

Most people in the US however, use a decorative comforter or quilt with additional blankets if it is cold. Most of these things are difficult to clean and the material isn't as soft as a duvet. So for comfort and to keep the blankets and comforter or quilt clean, they sleep between a fitted sheet and a flat sheet.

When making your bed, place the flat sheet on top of the fitted sheet, with the nicer side down. The part of the flat sheet that goes at the head of the bed should have a clean hem of about three or four inches. The sheet should cover your entire mattress, with the nice edge of the flat sheet even with the head of your bed. Then tuck the extra portion of the flat sheet at the foot of the bed underneath the mattress. Place blankets and comforter or quilt on top of the flat sheet, again keeping them even with the head of the bed. Tuck any blankets under the mattress at the foot, but leave the edge of the comforter or quilt exposed. Then, grasping the part of the comforter/quilt, blankets, and flat sheet at the head of the bed, fold down so there is about one foot of exposed fitted sheet. Place your pillows in this section.

When you get into bed, your body goes between the flat sheet and the fitted sheet.

Yes. You sleep between the fitted sheet and the flat sheet. The purpose is to keep your blankets clean from the dirt and sweat on your body, as well as any other bodily fluids.

I need to purchase one queen flat sheet, not the whole set. Does any place still sell one sheet @ a time?

  • Fitted sheets are for covering the bed the flat sheets are for covering you in the bed.
