I want your opinion as a non-Japanese!?
I am thinking of a trip to Japan, well, we do this every other year to take a short domestic travel within Japan. I want to hear where you, as a foreigner, liked the best besides Kyoto, Nara, Nikko and Hakone. I am trying to decide which place my American husband might enjoy. We saw enough of temples and shrines already... I am thinking about somewhere with nice scenery. We'll be staying at Yokohama area, and the trip shouldn't be too expensive. Thanks!

Walk the Nakasendo trail from Tsumago to Magome and spend the night in one of these two villages. It is especially beautiful in Autumn with all the different colours of the foliage.
Very romantic at night when most of the tourists have left.
Source(s): I went there last year and stayed at a minshuku in Tsumago. - SaruLv 61 decade ago
I would suggest Miyajima/Itsukushima near Hiroshima. The island is very peaceful and you can enjoy a nice hike around the Mountain and see wild Monkeys and Tone of friendly Deer similar to Nara.
If you go in Fall is the best season so that you can witness the Momiji.
Their is a small town with good food and of course a couple of amazing Shrines to visit. The island is a place of great beauty and it has a nice romantic feel at night as you walk around and listen to the sounds of the gentle waves.
You can find some decent rates at the Hotels and as a Foreigner he can buy a Special JR Rail pass to cut on expenses also...

Well, I really liked Sendai, but I was there for Tanabata and I'm not sure how far that is from Yokohama or how expensive it would be to get there from Yokohama. There is plenty of nice scenery around there, especially if you go up to the castle (nice views!) and Zuihoden (ignore the buildings if you want and just enjoy the quiet and the pretty trees and such).

Well if you want to enjoy yourselves, you should say what you like to do. I've been there twice as a foreign exchange student and I found Japan to be my number one destination of choice. Pretty much there are 3 cities that focus on different things. If you like shopping then you would want to go to Osaka which would probably be about 3000 yen, but is the number one shopping city in Japan. Kyoto mainly focuses on the shrines and history of Japan. Nara. . . I've been there but don't know what to say about it. It's pretty much a combination in my opinion. I would recommend going to Osaka, there are a lot of things to do there.

If you have not experienced Hakone, It'd be one possible recommendation to enjoy good view and Onsen to stay.
It is not far from Yokohama and day-trip is easy but I definitely advise you stay a couple of night there.

If you like Japanese food and hot spa with scenic view, Onsen ryokan is the best choice always.
