Keyboard problem, I'm desperate...please help?
I have been using a wireless keyboard and mouse on my PC (with a USB adapter) for over a year now without a problem. Then recently the keyboard stopped working while the mouse is fine.
I got a wired USB keyboard from a friend and that won't work either. Now I just purchased a new wireless USB keyboard and that won't work either.
The problem is I can't even install the software that came with the keyboards because I cannot get beyond the main screen where you are asked to enter your account password.
I've looked up this question on here and everyone seems to suggest using a keyboard with the older Ps/2 connection but my PC doesn't havea PS/2 port.
It's a Dell Dimension 5150.
*10 points for the best answer* I'm desperate at this stage!
I can't do a system restore because I cannot get into my account and Is it possible to get to the BIOS without the keyboard?
"TheXFilez" = thanks they were good suggestions but again, I cannot get into device manager as I need a keyboard to get into device manager. I have one of those USB to PS/2 adapters somewhere so I'll try to find that, in the mean time has anyone any other ideas? Thanks..

Thats very odd because XP or Vista will automatically detect a USB device. That fact your Mouse works through USB shows it's not your USB port. Unless you are plugged into a USB hub then it may not have enough power running into it.
Have you tried the new USB keyboard in all the USB ports, front and back of the computer. Also, sorry i have to ask, did you change the battery in the keyboard that goes with the mouse?
You can also buy a small PS2 to USB adapter, you could try that with a PS2 keyboard.
Also try going into your device manager and seeing if you have any erros on your USB ports, they should show up by showing a yellow expclamation point. Try uninstalling all your USB ports from your device manager, then restart your computer and XP will auto detect them all again, they may of gotten corrupted.
Just a few ideas, hope that helps.
I don't get how you can't get into device manager if you said your mouse still works???

Firstly i find this hard to believe that you do not have a PS/2 Port on the rear of your computer any new computers still have them as most standard computing Peripherals use this port connection, compared to the USB port which continually fails after prolonged use.
To access the bios you will need the keyboard, mouse will not work until logo screen, the only thing i can actually think of is attempting to buy a PS/2 keyboard and if you don't have the ports then buy the interface card and insert it and then attempt to use it. This shouldn't cost to much but it should work once you get to this stage i recommend whacking in the XP Disc and then going through the installation pages until you reach an option to repair your current installation of windows, do this and let it run then it should replace system 32 files and registry files which i believe should sort your problem :)
Hope it helps.

I think the problem may be your USB drivers. I would first try using a different USB port as the one you're using could be damaged. Second, I would re-install the USB drivers.
Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager
Scroll down the list until you find 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' then click the plus (+) sign next to it. Right-click on each of the "USB Root Hub" titles and click 'Update Driver...'
> Although it says 'update drivers' it is the same as installing them fresh. So if the problem lies with the drivers, then it should solve it.

Hello! A few questions first....
1) Is your pc running xp or vista?
2)Does your cd drive autorun bootable disks from the screen just after the POST- the first boot screen you see? it may say something like boot from cd......'
3)Finally do you have a copy of your windows installation cd? I'm guessing you also have access to another pc, so all is not lost!

Everything you are mentioning here sounds like it's related to your USB. Try your mouse connection in another slot to see if it's still working. If it's not, then you know the USB port is bad.

try doing a system restore if you have windows xp, to a point where you were able to use the keyboard, then do a virus check
