What can I use on small bream other than live bait?

I was thinking a fly or something, but I would appreciate some input.

Background- I'm going to try to catch a ton of small bream out of a river for a friends pond. His pond needs them for bass food to stabilize the food chain...

Update:

The bass in his pond are very skinny. Some have the head of a 3 pounder, but they only weigh a pound tops... very disturbing...

Rooster Tail brand spinner-baits. There are a variety of color combinations to use. When its sunny out, use darker colors, when its cloudy and overcast use brighter colors. Use the 1/16 ounce to 1/8 ounce. These lures are pretty cheap too. Also another good lure for them is the Beetle Spin as it is called and its even cheaper. All these can be found at Wal-mart.

I used to use a small strip of white pork rind on a little hook to due the opposite of what you're trying to accomplish, diminish the bream population. You'll actually have to cut the pork off when you're done.

You could also just call the DNR in your state and they will work with on stabilizing the pond. If you don't want the state involved you could go to the closest hatchery and just buy bream by the hundreds for pennies a piece.

    Good luck with your project.

I have to agree with specklbug. You don't want to cause a problem to solve a problem. Try a bunch of different locations when catching and keeping your bream so you don't deplete the food source in the stream. And when letting the bream go in the pond don't throw them all in at the same location. They will get eaten before they have a chance to get established.

Adding more Bluegill to your pond will not help your Bass population.

Already "starving" Bass won't be able to chase down medium-full-size Bluegill. AND the Bluegill will start feeding on whatever the Bass are currently existing on!

    Your best bet?

Either purchase or catch Mud-minnows or small shiners. Use a Minnow-trap, seine-net, cast-net, ETC.

Bass can easily inhale a minnow or small shiner and Minnows don't readily compete with your already starving Bass.

Understand that there may also be pollutants in the pond causing the fish to stop eating.........

live sandworm is the best, but frozen prawn, squid and pipi also usually works very well. bream can be caught on flys or soft plastic lures but if you want lots of them i wouldnt bother with them just use my first suggestions.. also be aware bream have size limits and bag limits dont go breaking the law because a 25cm bream is approximately 9 years old, thats a long time to grow to the size limit

J- has my vote on this one. Adding bream may cause more harm than good at this point. Here's a site that could be of some use to help your friend out, " http://www.uaex.edu/wneal/Pond_Management/ " ~good luck catchin'.

Try some breadballs to see if they bite. Here in S.C., they fish for Bream, but I don't know what they use for bait. See if the breadballs work. Good luck!
